Explore Magdeburg in one day, Germany

Another week, another one day trip. At the moment I often use my 49 Euro Deutschland Ticket for day trips from Berlin. I love to discover new places and also to explore Germany. Because not only abroad there are many interesting places, but practically on the doorstep there is a lot to explore. For every taste there is something from city trips, club tour to hikes in nature.Honestly, I hadn’t Magdeburg on my travel but it is a beautiful city for a day trip.

Magdeburg, with about 239,000 inhabitants, is the capital of the state of Saxony-Anhalt in Germany. It is located on the Elbe River and was first mentioned in the Middle Ages in 805. In 968, the first emperor Otto I. founded the archbishopric of Magdeburg. The city was destroyed several times in the course of history, such as in the 30-year war or in the Second World War, in which about 90% of the old town was destroyed.

How to get to Magdeburg?

From Berlin by train and by car the city is about 2 hours away. If you want to explore the city from Hannover, you need about 1 h 30 min to get there. On site, the sights are super accessible on foot or by public transport. Check your connections on the Deutsche Bahn website to see the travel time and if necessary the transfer time.

Grüne Zitadelle

The Green Citadel is the building you can see as the post image. The building was designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser and completed in 2005. In the Green Citadel are two courtyards and in which you can also see the birdhouses. You have to walk a bit through the corridors, because there are a few. I did not find it at first go. Furthermore there are café, stores and restaurants in the building. The Green Citadel has a grassy roof and there are many trees on, in and around the building.

Faunenbrunnen

When I walked through the city, I discovered this extraordinary fountain. It is known under the names of the Faunbrunnen, Faunenbrunnen or Teufelsbrunnen and is located in the old town. The Faunbrunnen was created by the sculptor Heinrich Apel and was inaugurated in 1986 with a fountain festival in the pedestrian zone.

Magdeburger Dom

Magdeburg Cathedral is the landmark of the city. The construction of the building was started around 1207, in 1363 it was consecrated but only in 1520 the cathedral was completely finished. It was built in Gothic style and the Roman-German Emperor Otto I. (Otto the Great) is buried there.

The church is very impressive from the outside, so I recommend you to walk around the church once, as there are many beautiful places where you can take photos or just enjoy the view. The cathedral measures about 104 m and you can also go inside for an entrance fee of 7 € for adults, 5 € reduced (pupils, students…) and free for children under 14 years. You even get the opportunity to enjoy the view from the top in the north tower. Just look how small the people look against the cathedral, that’s impressive!

I must say the short trip was worth it and it was not crowded in the city, but I had some places to myself for a short time. There is certainly much more to explore in Magdeburg, if you have more time or a second time in the city.

Best,

Saskia ❤
