From Lisbon to Porto: A Journey to the Heart of Northern Portugal

It’s slowly getting warmer in Portugal, and the rain is lessening. It’s the perfect time to explore Portuguese cities before they get too crowded. I chose Porto at the beginning of April.

🚌 From Lisbon to Porto by Bus

f you’re traveling from Lisbon, I recommend the Flixbus from Oriente, and it was actually super easy and comfortable. The ride took about 3.5 hours and paid 20 €, and I got to see some of the countryside along the way. It’s a budget-friendly way to travel, and once I arrived at Campanhã bus station, I felt the adventure truly beginning!

🏞️ First Impressions

Porto has this charming, old-world vibe. As soon as I arrived, I noticed the colorful houses, steep hills, and the amazing views of the Douro River. The city feels both lively and peaceful — perfect for wandering around with no plan.

📍 Places You Shouldn’t Miss

Here are some of the places I visited and absolutely recommend:

  • Ribeira: The historic riverside district, full of cafés, street performers, and incredible views. A great place to chill with a drink and watch the boats.

  • Dom Luís I Bridge: Walk across the top level for a stunning view of the city, especially at sunset.

  • Livraria Lello: A magical bookstore (rumored to have inspired Harry Potter!) with a grand staircase and stained glass. You need a ticket, but it’s worth it.

  • São Bento Train Station: Even if you’re not taking a train, stop by to admire the blue-and-white tile murals inside.

  • Clérigos Tower: Climb to the top for a 360° view of Porto. It’s a bit of a workout, but the view is amazing.

  • Jardins do Palácio de Cristal: A peaceful park with peacocks, hidden paths, and great river views.

🍷 Don’t Forget the Port Wine

Across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, you’ll find all the famous Port wine cellars. I joined a short tour and tasting session — even as a total beginner, it was easy to enjoy. The wine is sweet and strong, and learning about its history made it even better.

❤️ Final Thoughts

Porto felt like the perfect mix of culture, food, and beautiful views. It’s smaller than Lisbon but has its own strong personality. I didn’t feel rushed or overwhelmed — just happy to explore, eat, and take it all in.

Can’t wait to write more about my next trip soon!

Best regards,

Saskia ❤
