Best day trips from Berlin

Are you visiting Berlin and want to see more cities near by? Maybe travel to another countries? Then you are right here. Even when you are local, there are so many places to see around Berlin.

I lived in Berlin for 3 years and loved that many cities can be reached by train in a short time because everything is super connected. Another option is to use the Flixbus or go by car.

1. Leipzig

Leipzig is located in Saxony and offers a large number of museums and galleries, making the city particularly interesting for those interested in culture. Leipzig is also known for its rich cultural and musical heritage. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote is famous play “Faust” there and the composer Johann Sebastian Bach lived and worked in the city.

2. Lüneburg

Lüneburg, which is located in Lower Saxony, is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. The city is known historically for its salt trade. Lüneburg was first mentioned in documents in 956 and has preserved its beautiful brick Gothic old town to this day. The characteristic gabled houses and numerous sights make the old town a real highlight.

3. Madgeburg

Magdeburg, with about 239,000 inhabitants, is the capital of the state of Saxony-Anhalt in Germany. It is located on the Elbe River and was first mentioned in the Middle Ages in 805. In 968, the first emperor Otto I. founded the archbishopric of Magdeburg. The city was destroyed several times in the course of history, such as in the 30-year war or in the Second World War, in which about 90% of the old town was destroyed. If you want to read more about the city, check out my blog post about it.

4. Potsdam

You need to buy an ABC ticket to visit also Potsdam, which is only around 35 minutes away from Berlin and you can use the S7 which brings you direct to Potsdam central station. There are so many things to see in Potsdam like the Sanssouci Palace, new palace, Cecilienhof, park Babelsberg and many more places. You can easily spend several days there.

5. Quedlinburg

The city belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage which includes the historic city centre, the castle hill and the Münzenberg.

6. Schwerin

A city which has a castle like in the Disney movies, but this one is real and stands in Schwerin. Maybe you ask yourself where Schwerin is located.  Schwerin is the capital city of the federal state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (MV) which is in North Germany. Walking around the castle in the park is free and If you want to get a closer look and do a tour through the castle for 8,50 euros.

7. Szczecin

If you want to visit another country while staying in Berlin, here is your chance! Not far away is Szczecin, which is located in Poland. Its such a cute and historical city to walk around. You will see castle of the Pomeranian Dukes, Wały Chrobrego and many more places.

8. Warnemünde

Perfect day trip for a hot summer to cool off in the water. But Warnemünde is also worth a visit at any time of the year to walk at the beach, eat (for example fish) and stroll through the shops. The city is located in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern at the Baltic Sea.

9. Wernigerode

Wernigerode is located nearby the Harz Mountains in the state of Saxony-Anhalt in Germany.

Are you planning to visit Berlin?

Best,

Saskia ❤
